First SUMIT-based Products Debut at ESC Boston

3 years 3 months ago → Industry News

Boston, MA, October 28, 2008 - The Small Form Factor Special Interest Group (SFF-SIG), a collaboration of 18 leading suppliers of embedded components, boards and system technologies today announced that the first products implementing the SIG’s SUMIT Interface Standard are being shown this week at the Embedded Systems Conference in Boston. The SUMIT interface standard, offering expansion bus interfaces for PCI Express, LPC, I2C, SPI and USB on one or two high density connectors, was initially launched by the SFF-SIG in March, 2008. The standard is among the very first designed especially to accommodate the new family of ultra-low power processors such as VIA Nano™ and Intel Atom™.

The products implementing the SUMIT interface include:

VIA EPIA P710 Pico-ITXe Single Board Computer. This tiny (72mm x 100 mm) SBC based on the SFF-SIG’s soon to be published Pico-ITXe™ form factor standard provides a SUMIT AB interface for I/O expansion. Before SUMIT was available, SBCs as small as the Pico-ITX format were unable to support I/O expansion cards within the outline of the SBC itself. VIA’s design is based on a draft version of the Pico-ITXe Specification available to SFF-SIG members. The SFF-SIG expects to publish Version 1.0 of the Pico-ITXe Specification on their web site before the end of 2008.

WinSystems’ PCO-UIO48 Digital I/O Card. This 48-line digital I/O card is in the new Pico-I/O™ form factor and uses the SUMIT A interface to an SBC. The Pico I/O form factor specification is available now to members of the SFF-SIG and will be published on the SFF-SIG web site by the end of 2008. It defines a 60mm x 72mm I/O card using the SUMIT A or SUMIT AB interface.

Further information about these products may be obtained from VIA and WinSystems respectively. The SFF-SIG expects a number of additional products using the SUMIT interface to be announced over the next several months. The SUMIT Interface Specification may be found on the SIG web site at www.sff-sig-org.

Companies interested in participating in the future evolution of the SUMIT, Pico-ITXe or Pico I/O Specifications or other small form factor definitions should contact the SFF-SIG at info@sff-sig.org.

About the Small Form Factor Special Interest Group

The Small Form Factor Special Interest Group is an international organization devoted to identifying, creating, and promoting standards that help electronics system and device manufacturers and integrators move to small form factor technologies and building blocks in their products, and protect their investments. Benefits of small form factor products include smaller size, reduced power consumption (eco-friendly, “green” products), and greater reliability compared to larger legacy products.

The SIG’s philosophy is to embrace the latest technologies, as well as maintain legacy compatibility and enable smooth transition solutions to next-generation interfaces. For more information about the SFF SIG, please visit www.sff-sig.org
