Columbia, MD., April 2, 2008 – Applied Data Systems, a subsidiary of the Eurotech Group, announces today the launch of the Catalyst Module, the company's latest computer on module product for low power, high performance applications. The Catalyst Module, created by a dedicated Applied Data team, combines Applied Datas expertise in power management techniques and algorithms with the Intel® Atom™ processor Z500 series and Intel® System Controller Hub US15W.
The Catalyst Module, with a system-level power draw below 5W, brings Intel® architecture-compatible capabilities to applications for low power environments, so devices can be enclosed, without fans or heat sinks, while still supporting the latest multimedia, positioning, and networking capabilities in portable, battery-operated, handheld devices. Building on the Catalyst Module platform, manufacturers can build applications in entertainment, gaming, defense, medical, and control industries.
With the Intel® Atom™ processor, device manufacturers choose from several operating systems, even bringing desktop OSs to handheld units for a mobile workers or end users. Microsoft Windows applications such as XP, XP Embedded, Vista, and CE extend the OS options manufacturers can use for their applications. In addition, Linux is fully supported through Applied Data and select real-time OS options can be supported as required.
“Applied Data has enjoyed a long relationship with Intel as an Associate Member of the Intel® Embedded and Communications Alliance,” said Robert Olsen, Applied Datas president. “We knew immediately that the Intel Atom technology on our Catalyst Module would open up new high-performance applications in the low power environment, such as gaming, in-vehicle entertainment, and PDA-like devices.”
“By utilizing the Intel® Atom™ processor Z500 series and Intel® System Controller Hub, Applied Data has been able to offer a platform for high performance applications with ultra low power,” said Jonathan Luse, director of marketing, the Low Power Embedded Products Division at Intel. “The Catalyst Module demonstrates Applied Datas understanding of the manufacturing challenges when building applications in a small form factor for the embedded low power market.”
The computer on module design of the Catalyst Module allows manufacturers to get to market quickly, by separating the processor module from the I/O carrier card. Manufacturers have the flexibility to have Applied Data, other Eurotech member companies or a third-party create the carrier card to accompany the Catalyst Module. Applied Data offers a full-functioned carrier board in a Catalyst Module development system that manufacturers use to develop their application early in the process.
Applied Data Systems is an Associate Member of the Intel Embedded and Communications Alliance, a six-time winner of the Independent hardware Vendor Excellence Award from Microsoft, and a contributor to the Debian Open Source community.
Applied Data Systems will display the Catalyst Module embedded computer on module system at the Embedded Systems Conference, April 15 through 17, 2008, in San Jose, CA. Please visit us at the Applied Data / Eurotech booths 1646 and 744 for a live demonstration of the platform.
